What is Alipay?
Alipay is the Chinese e-wallet. The omnichannel payment method is used by over 900 million users annually. Worldwide, there are even 1.2 billion users annually. It was developed by China’s largest web-based platform Alibaba. Together with WeChatPay, Alipay is responsible for over three quarters of all online and mobile payments in China.
Is Alipay relevant for my webshop?
Adding Alipay as a payment method is of interest when your webshop is focused on the Chinese market or if you want to process payments from Chinese tourists. The payment method is extremely popular in the retail and tourist branch. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam for example offers its Chinese customers the opportunity to pay with Alipay.
Pay with Alipay
In order to be able to pay with Alipay, the consumer has to link a debit bank account or credit card to the e-wallet. When purchases are made with Alipay, be it via desktop or mobile, the purchase amount is automatically debited.

Alipay online payment
Alipay online payments: do you shop online using your pc or laptop? Then you can pay with Alipay as well. During checkout or on the payment page, an Alipay QR code is shown which consumers can scan onscreen with their smartphone. They are then asked to log in on the Alipay account in order to authorise the payment.
Alipay mobile payment
Alipay mobile payment: paying via mobile is the fastest and most common way of payment with Alipay. Via the checkout on a mobile website or app, the consumer is redirected to the Alipay app. After logging in, the consumer has to authorise the transaction request.
